ShortcutsFoodHow Adolf loved a bit of troutMan, some people are so touchy: descendants of the victims of Adolf Hitler have successfully lobbied to get a TV chef the sack. The 30-year-old Flemish cook, Jeroen Meus, was recreating the favourite dishes of famous men, for which, on this occasion, he had journeyed to Hitler's mountain hideaway, Eagle's Nest. You must admit, it lacks sensitivity. But get some perspective, people! He only waggled a fish at the memory of six million dead.

Safiya SinclairThe poet began life in a hidden village by the sea. But then her father became stricter and more suspicious of the corrupting influence of ‘Babylon’ …
We lived by the seaside until I was five years old, in our tiny fishing village called White House, which belonged to the fishermen of my mother’s family, her father and grandfather. Hidden just beyond the margins of the postcard idea of Jamaica was our little community, a modest hamlet shrouded behind a wall of wind-gnarled trees and haphazard cinder blocks, a half mile of hot sand browned from our daily living and sifting between bare toes, glittering 300 yards in every direction to the sea.
Port ValeLettersRemember John Rudge, the unsung hero of Port ValeThe Port Vale Supporters’ Club hopes to erect a statue to the legendary manager in Burslem, writes Joan Walley
Max Rushden’s article (Mark Bonner’s Cambridge exit reminds us of the strange existence for managers, 30 November) is a heartfelt remembrance of the tenure of a manager who kept the dream alive despite all the odds. Rushden’s timely reference to a last-minute goal scored at Vale Park is a golden opportunity for me to urge the Guardian to review the legendary Port Vale manager John Rudge’s book To Cap It All.
MoviesReviewThe veteran war reporter Robert Fisk poses painful and profound questions about conflict and humanity in this engaging biographical documentary
1980: Middle East correspondent Robert Fisk dodges gunfire in bombed-to-rubble streets on the frontline of the Iran-Iraq war. Cut to 2018, and Fisk, nearly 40 years older, hair a little thinner, glasses a little less clunky, is walking through almost identical ruined streets, this time in Homs, Syria. After a lifetime reporting on conflict, Fisk reflects on the capacity of human beings to cause chaos on such a scale.

He took part in masterclasses given by the great Italian pianist Arturo Benedetti Michelangeli in Arezzo in 1957–58 and made his London debut in 1959, but his big breakthrough came with his American recordings, issued by the Connoisseur Society, of 1962.
Life and styleMy addiction had almost destroyed me – and now I was on the brink of a relapse. Then I remembered how the star had turned his own life around
The date was 12 March 2023. My body was shaking all over. My life flashed before my eyes: the incessant binge-drinking sessions, countless blackouts, urinating all over myself, gorging on cheesy chips and Domino’s Pizza in the early hours of the morning, jobs given up after just a few weeks.

Sleep‘We’re built for sleep,’ according to the psychologist Aric Prather, yet many of us still struggle to overcome insomnia. He talks us through his ‘prescription’
Many of us are hoping for a happier, healthier life in 2023. We may already be trying lifestyle changes (daily meditation, giving up dairy), but for most of us the greatest gains to be had are in sleeping better. Regardless of your specific goal – whether it be to lose weight, reduce stress, get fitter, advance at work, or be a better friend or partner – it is hard to achieve anything when you have had insufficient sleep.
Television & radioAfter an agonising wait, the 10 episodes that came out in Australia a year ago are now on Disney+. They’re spectacular, boundary-pushing TV – but we need them quicker!
There’s a scene in Christopher Nolan’s Interstellar that breaks my heart every time I watch it. Matthew McConaughey travels to an alien planet knowing that, for every hour he spends on its surface, seven years will pass on Earth. But something goes wrong, and the mission takes longer than he anticipated.
